CLASSES: T R 09:35A - 10:50A, 270 Willard

THE PURPOSE OF CHEM 108 is to facilitate success in Chem 110 for all students: we want EVERYONE to pass Chem 110. This is done in a number of ways.

§        Getting Ahead: Many Chem 108 assignments are designed to help students keep up with or even be ahead in their Chem 110 studies rather than always catching up. The assigned Lecture Worksheets and weekly homework assignments are two specific ways in which this is done.

§        Skill Building: Through skill check tests, students are encouraged to build and strengthen basic skills needed to be successful in Chem 110.

§        Active and Collaborative Learning: Students are encouraged to work together in class to solve problems and to develop problem-solving skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

All students registered for CHEM 108 must be taking CHEM 110 concurrently: assignments in class will be made in conjunction with the CHEM 110 lecture.  For example, Lecture Worksheets are directly related to the reading assignment for each CHEM 110 lecture.

REQUIRED TEXT:

There is no required text for Chem 108. However, you will be expected to purchase the required packet. Course materials will also be posted on the course Web page or on Angel (http://cms.psu.edu). In addition to the Chem 108 Study Guide and group problems you should bring your calculator to each class.

CHEM 108 CLASS:

Each class, your assigned group will be responsible for working on problems based on the main ideas covered in Chem 110 lectures that week. Worksheets and homework sets found on the Chem 108 Student Packet will be one source of the group work activities; other lecture related problem-solving activities will be introduced as needed.

GRADING:

The grade for this class will be based on attendance and participation in classroom activities, homework assignments including Lecture Worksheets, and on the ability to master basic skills necessary for success in Chem 110. The final grade in the class will be assigned as follows:

Homework                                                  25 points

Attendance and Group Work                         75 points

Total points available              100 points

The final grades for this class will be assigned according to the following distribution:

Points earned           Grade

90-100%                    A/A-

80-89%                     B+/B/B-

70-79%                     C+/C

60-69%                     D

0-59%                       F

CLASS POLICIES:

1.     Homework will be collected at the beginning of class. Any homework turned in during class or at the end of class will be considered late.

2.     In general, late assignments will NOT be accepted for credit.  Work can, however, be turned in early.

3.     Written excuses are required if you want an absence to be taken into account in grading. Include an explanation for any assignments missed as well.

4.   If you miss a class for any reason, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get any assignments that you missed.  Missing a class is not an excuse for late homework. You will be expected to see your instructor to obtain assignments, and complete them when they are due. (Contact your instructor via e-mail for example, to make arrangements to pick up assignments.) Homework should be turned in early if an absence is anticipated.
