CHEM 110 Fall

We assume that students taking Chem 110 have completed a high school chemistry course and remember at least some of what they learned. Many students wonder if their preparation for this class is sufficient. To help you in that assessment and to ensure that you are properly placed in the right course, you must take a short pre-quiz. This pre-quiz will NOT be counted in any way toward your Chem 110 grade; it is simply a tool for you to use to ensure that you are in the correct Chemistry course. The pre-quiz is accessible through Angel (the course management system) but will only be available until Weds. Aug. 27 at midnight. Instructions for accessing the pre-quiz are given below. The quiz will take about 20 minutes. You do NOT need a calculator or notes so any time you have a 20-minute block of time, you can take this test as long as your computer has internet access and you have a PSU access account. Do NOT study for the quiz, look up answers, or get help. Any of those things would defeat the purpose of the quiz, which is to assess your readiness for Chem 110. Your actual score on the quiz will NOT be used to determine your grade in any way so getting help or looking things up would be counterproductive. DO NOT USE A CALCULATOR: You may be tempted to use one on some of the questions, but please do all necessary calculations by hand. We believe that your ability to handle simple calculations contributes to your readiness for this course and we want to include it as part of the assessment, so please resist the temptation to use a calculator. When you finish the pre-quiz, you will receive specific feedback about your readiness. Instructions for taking the pre-quiz: 1. Login to Angel (the Penn State Course Management system http://cms.psu.edu). You login to Angel using your PSU access account and password. 2. In your profile (initial page in Angel) select the course FA08 Chem 110. Under the Lessons Tab you will find a link to the pre-quiz. Select that link and you will find instructions for the pre-quiz and an EXAM button. By selecting the EXAM button you will begin the quiz. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU CAN COMPLETE THE PRE-QUIZ IN THIS SITTING: you will NOT be able to log in and take the pre-quiz another time, once you start. Remember: do NOT look up anything or ask for help. For the feedback on this pre-quiz to be meaningful, you should do the best you can on your own. Again, your score will NOT be counted in your Chem 110 grade in any way so you have nothing to lose. You will only be allowed to take this test ONCE, so do not begin the test UNLESS you have 20 minutes to finish the test. You cannot save and return to the test at a later time. If you submit the test before you complete it YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE IT AGAIN. We cannot reset the testing system.
