To best explore this web site you need:

  1. Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) for PCs
  2. Acrobat for displaying "pdf" files
  3. Chime plug-in for visualization of molecules
  4. MS Windows Media Player and Flash Player for viewing animation and video files.
  5. Java

You may use alternative combinations of operating systems and browsers, but... "your mileage may vary". Since PCs with Windows operating systems are, by far (>90%), the main computer platform used by students taking organic chemistry, these web pages were optimized for such users. A general description of features available on our web site, and details on using Chime are provided on separate pages. Consider the following options and make your choices. Good luck!

  • If you like to be able to explore molecular structures in 3D (strongly recommended) you need to check below on how to chose and install your software.
  • If you do not want to use the interactive molecular display plug-in (Chime), simply use the newest versions of the browsers available (IE, or NN, or FF) on a PC or a Mac and do not bother with the information below.

For PC users (Windows NT, 2000,  XP):

  1. We very strongly recommend that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser.
  2. If you insist on using FireFox  you have to make some choices (for more details, check another page).

(a) Use the newest Firefox or Netscape Navigator. These are not fully compatible with Chime, at least as far as the installation is concerned. They displays the rest of the website correctly, and they can be made to display 3D molecular structures, but only if the Chime is manually installed (some computer expertise is required).

(b) Use an older Netscape Navigator (4.7x) that runs Chime without problems. This older version of Netscape, however, may not represent correctly some of the newest formatting features, especially if you resize the browser window in the middle of your session. If the page you are viewing looks poorly formatted after you have resized the browser window, you need to reload that page (some critical pages are already set up to automatically reload after browser window resizing). If you run NN 4.7x make sure that the browser is java-script and java enabled (check it under "Preferences/Advanced" menu).

  1. If you use multiple browsers, we recommend that you use IE as your default browser. To minimize software conflicts do not run different browsers at the same time. If conflicts appear, we suggest that you reboot your computer and run only the browser of your choice.

For Mac users:

  1. Chime is not compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer on Mac. Only old Netscape Navigator can be used.
  2. You need to get version 4.7x. This older version of Netscape, however, may not represent correctly some of the newest formatting features, especially if you resize the browser window in the middle of your session. If the page you are viewing looks out poorly formatted after you have resized the browser window, you need to reload that page (some pages are already set up to  automatically reload after browser window resizing).

Other computers and operating systems:

We have not tested the website design with other browsers, or on computers with other operating systems. In general, Chime is not expected to work on these platforms. If you have any experience in that area that you would like to share, please write to us.

Downloads:

For details on what to get and install read above. All these programs are free, although some may require registration. (Note that PSU computer labs have Acrobat Reader installed, and that they have restrictions on what programs can be installed.) More detailed instructions on installing the browsers and Chime are provided on separate pages.

Internet Explorer: if you have a PC, we suggest that you use the newest version. It supports some active controls not available in Netscape, and it works with Chime.
Netscape Communicator: if you have a Mac, you need to use version 4.75 (check the details on separate page). For PCs, if you prefer Netscape, you may also use version 4.75. It will work with Chime, but may not display some formatting features correctly. The newest  version has no problems with formatting, but it is more difficult to make it work with Chime. If you decide to go through the more difficult installation path, we recommend that you use Mozilla, instead of Netscape.
Mozilla: This is a non-commercial version of the Netscape Communicator with all the functionality of the newest Netscape. But it has significantly fewer bugs, and no apparent connection to AOL. It is strongly recommended for every Netscape fun. Get the newest version of the Firefox.
Acrobat Reader:  Allows you to view, navigate, and print PDF files. Available (for free) from Adobe for all major computing platforms. Get one! It is very useful. We offer practice exams, spectral problems etc. in that form. Any time you see this icon  you will need this software. Get it!
Chime:  for viewing 2D and 3D structure.  From MDL, it requires Internet Explorer or Netscape 4.75. (see above).  You need to register to download. Get one! We are using it anytime you see this icon .
Java:  It is necessary to operate some of the applets on our website. It allows for safe execution of small programs directly on your computer. Keep it updated.
MS Windows Media Player: very convenient for display of media files (sound, video). Get the newest version from Microsoft (it's free).
Flash Player:  good for display of animations and  playing small media files (sound, video). The newest version is available from Adobe (at no charge).
